The BioRescue story continues to journey around the world!
The story of a large team of scientists, caretakers, veterinarians, conservationists, and rangers devoted to saving the northern white rhinos from extinction.

Zach is probably the person who knows Najin and Fatu best.
His life is devoted to the two, they are like family to him.
He has been taking care of them since the moment they arrived in Kenya, in 2009.
The week Curra and Ouwan died was a very difficult and dramatic one for the whole team of keepers.
“It shook our hearts because we were expecting good news and instead we lost two rhinos. Everyone here at OL Pejeta was so sad.”
But after BioRescue’s announcement last week, he is more confident than ever that the final goal is reachable.
“I am hopeful that we will see a baby northern white rhino playing in the bushes in a few years time.”
“I have seen how science is advancing and with the last step I think we can still save the species”.

In 2015 a group of 20 international scientists from five continents met in Vienna to develop a new strategic roadmap for saving the critically endangered NWR.
Today they are closer to achieving that than ever before and
such a big mission wouldn’t be possible without a big team behind!

Prof Thomas Hildebrandt, Head of the BioRescue Project, shares the bitter sweet feeling he was left with after examining the Southern White rhino foetus at @olpejeta .
Curra, the surrogate mother, died due to an infection. So did the foetus. The region they lived in was hit by heavy rains, which brought up a bacteria hidden in the soil. That bacteria not only killed Curra and the baby, it also killed the male with whom they shared their enclosure.
The entire team was in shock, especially our colleagues from Ol Pejeta who take care of the animals and love them as if they were family.

A huge MILESTONE for conservation of the @biorescue_project Team!
This set of photos was taken last November in @olpejeta , Kenya. The group of scientists lead by Prof Thomas Hildebrandt examined this foetus, the result of the first successful embryo transfer in rhinos.
Unfortunately the surrogate mother died due to an infection, however this throws a rope of hope to the bigger task: to safe the Northern White Rhino from extinction.

Something different today!
On may this year I was able to see by myself the fantastic work the @biorescue_project @kenyawildlifeservice @safariparkdvurkralove and @olpejeta are doing to safeguard the future of not only Najin and Fatu, the last living northern white rhinos in the planet, but also their entire sub-species. It was a very hectic week with a full programme.
However, last week there was a last minute change of plans that gave us the opportunity to spend some time with @zacharia_mutai , head keeper at the Conservancy, Najin, Fatu and their southern white rhino friend Tauwo. Intimate moments that we will never forget at the feet of Mt. Kenya.

Sea eagles have held cultural significance across history. They often represent qualities such as courage, vision, strength and a connection to the divine in various cultures, serving as a national symbol in many places all over the world.
White tailed sea eagles suffered a huge decline in their populations during the 19th century, which brought them almost to extinction.
Today their populations are recovering in many areas. However, white tailed sea eagles still face many threats and dangers.
Dr. Oliver Krone has been working at the IZW for over 20 years and one of his areas of expertise is the conflict between wildlife and anthropogenic structures like wind power plants, railways, power lines or roads.

Before the fantastic MontPhoto weekend started, I finally got to fulfil one of my biggest wishes, to dive at home at the #illesmedes and to see a bit of the fascinating biodiversity that lives there with my own eyes.
Not everything in the natural reserve works as desired, but it's been proven over the years that protecting the archipelago and giving nature the space she needs always pays off.
By protecting more areas in our waters, we can allow marine populations to recover so that they eventually leave these reserves. That would improve the living conditions of local families that live from fishing.
In only 40 years, this group of seven islands has become one of the most diverse places in the Mediterranean sea, showing us Nature's ability to thrive, when we let her.

In every swim, in every dive, in every walk along the coast, hundreds of small and big pieces of plastic everywhere.
It seems as if we got used to them, as if it is a new part of our landscape.
And this scares me a bit…
