Something different today!
On may this year I was able to see by myself the fantastic work the @biorescue_project @kenyawildlifeservice @safariparkdvurkralove and @olpejeta are doing to safeguard the future of not only Najin and Fatu, the last living northern white rhinos in the planet, but also their entire sub-species. It was a very hectic week with a full programme.
However, last week there was a last minute change of plans that gave us the opportunity to spend some time with @zacharia_mutai , head keeper at the Conservancy, Najin, Fatu and their southern white rhino friend Tauwo. Intimate moments that we will never forget at the feet of Mt. Kenya.

Before the fantastic MontPhoto weekend started, I finally got to fulfil one of my biggest wishes, to dive at home at the #illesmedes and to see a bit of the fascinating biodiversity that lives there with my own eyes.
Not everything in the natural reserve works as desired, but it's been proven over the years that protecting the archipelago and giving nature the space she needs always pays off.
By protecting more areas in our waters, we can allow marine populations to recover so that they eventually leave these reserves. That would improve the living conditions of local families that live from fishing.
In only 40 years, this group of seven islands has become one of the most diverse places in the Mediterranean sea, showing us Nature's ability to thrive, when we let her.

In every swim, in every dive, in every walk along the coast, hundreds of small and big pieces of plastic everywhere.
It seems as if we got used to them, as if it is a new part of our landscape.

Great news coming from Los Angeles! 🥳
My picture “Their future is in our hands” has been awarded with an honourable Mention in the 20th edition of the prestigious @iphotoawards (International Photography Awards).
This photograph was taken while working with @dr_melzheimer for the @gaia.initiative @leibnizizw.
This photo was taken in Kidepo National Park, Uganda, while documenting the work of scientists and conservationists on Vultures. Vultures have a crucial role in many ecosystems and yet we tend to demonise them. They are not the cutest and they have often been the villains in our stories, but have you ever thought how a landscape would look like without them?
Collecting all kinds of data from the animals is vital for their protection. By tagging them, the GAIA Initiative wants to gain a deeper understanding of their behaviour, habitat, and threats, leading to effective conservation strategies that protect them from extinction.
For the safety of both vultures and humans is extremely important to handle (@tourguideambrose ) the animals with strength and security. Vultures have very strong necks and their beaks are extremely sharp for reaching every single part of a carcass.

If you are not aware of it, I would totally recommend checking out what this consortium is working on!
Their work represents a commitment to pushing the boundaries of scientific knowledge and technology, through techniques like in vitro fertilisation and embryo transfer.
Despite the challenges they face, it is inspiring to see their incredible dedication and perseverance in their efforts to prevent the extinction of the northern white rhino. There are only 2 animals left in the entire world (mother and daughter, Najin and Fatu)!
While many challenges remain, the work the BioRescue is doing serves as a beacon of hope. It demonstrates that with determination, collaboration, and scientific expertise, we can strive to reverse the course of extinction and ensure a future for the northern white rhino and biodiversity.

Some of you might think that tagging animals can be limiting for them, specially for those dependant on high mobility to survive. But if the work is done well the animals can move naturally as you can see at the end of this clip.
This was filmed only one hour after tagging the animal!

Rangers work every day protecting the wildlife in the National Parks and this gives them an unrivalled knowledge of the terrain, which is a great help when searching for carcasses to tag vultures. Thanks to their paramilitary training, their main task is to ensure the safety of the whole team, but at the end of the day they are always there to lend a hand with whatever is needed.
