A big thanks to @accionsenegal and @vueling !!!
Beautiful Etosha … so full of life!!
A unique landscape, home to an astounding variety of mammals, reptiles and birds… Here, scientists work through the National Park’s dry plains hoping to get a better understanding of the ecosystem.

A weekend full of emotions… After a two-year break due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Montphoto family made it back together… and brought some new faces to Lloret de Mar 🙃 A festive mood, amazing speakers and inspiring stories that remind us -once again - how important it is to care for the world around us and find ways to give back to the place we call home.
Thanks to all who made it possible!

Often misunderstood, vultures are bright and their intelligent eyes seem all-seeing. This naughty vulture in Berlin’s Tierpark was sure it had seen treats in our bag and went straight for them...
@gaia.initiative @tierparkberlin
Most people do not know how important vultures are and how we all benefit from their „services“. They eat dead - and rotting - animal carcasses, even if they are infected with anthrax or rabies. This way, they help keep ecosystems healthy and prevent the spread of these diseases. Now, they will be fitted with tags aimed at gathering more information about their living conditions, and scientists hope the collected data will help stop the decline of vulture populations in Africa. Several vulture species are on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

A very important part of the @gaia.initiative is the technical side of it. Engineers at the Fraunhofer IIS are developing a new generation of animal tags for vultures that will include a camera and artificial intelligence. They are expected to allow for real-time observation of certain ecosystems in Africa.

Scientists rarely work alone. In the @gaia.initiative , teamwork is the key to success. Space engineers, biologists, AI specialists... all united in their passion for science, perseverance and hard work with one goal only: to help preserve an endangered species like the white-backed vulture.

It’s been a long road, with ups and downs. This was an up: the day two white-backed vultures were equipped with a “backpack” that will allow scientists to know more about their nature and fight for their conservation.
For this, the Gaia Initiative teamed up with the @tierparkberlin in order to improve the work of their scientists in the field.

It has taken three years to complete the first leg of the GAIA initiative. It has happened thanks to an amazing, hard working team that has put their strengths together hoping to pair the evolutionary intelligence of vultures with our own and artificial intelligence.
Here, some words from @dr_melzheimer , one of the minds behind the @gaia.initiative
We are just happy to be witnessing every little step of the way ;)
